Modern Landfill Management
Not
all waste can be recycled, recovered, composted or converted into energy given
the difficulties & costs inherent in the sorting of heterogeneous waste
streams as well as the market inefficiencies for the final products.
Ultimately,
the landfill will be the final resting place for waste which otherwise has no
economic or resource value. However, the modern sanitary landfill is a far cry
from the early open dumps.
Today's
modern landfills are engineered to protect the environment - air, land and water
from potential contamination. They are double lined with both clay and
synthetic liners to prevent drainage into the groundwater, and monitoring
devices are placed between the liners to detect any rupture of the water-tight
seal. Additionally, leachate collection systems are installed to draw out of the
landfill all water which percolates through. This water is treated above ground
at on-site leachate treatment facilities. The filling of the landfill is
carefully controlled and monitored, with layers of cover materials being applied
over layers of waste. Finally, the landfill is brought to a final grade, water
runoff systems are engineered and installed, the landfill is capped with
synthetic covers to prevent moisture from re-entering the landfill, and gas
collection systems are installed to vent methane which is generated as a
by-product of the waste decomposition. This methane gas extraction from the
landfill is a viable and valuable by-product and should be harness to provide
local energy.
Amerish International Corp.
can show you the many beneficial uses of landfill gas ranging from direct firing
in industrial boiler applications, to the generation of electricity, to the
conversion to pipeline quality natural gas. A separate contract of the energy
phase of a landfill project can be provided.
On
landfills where modern disposal techniques have not been practiced
Amerish International Corp. can offer a program to remediate potential environmental dangers. This is
known as Landfill Remodeling.
Following a
detailed feasibility study on your existing landfill to determine technical and
economic feasibility, our procedure creates new landfill space within your
existing landfill footprint by excavating the landfill and reprocessing the
materials found within, sorting and separating soil materials for reuse, sorting
high-value recyclables, then shredding and compacting the remaining waste for land filling
according to modern standards.
The trend of modern landfill facilities has been
going in the direction of specialization. Modern landfill facilities require
the following to be successful.
-
Garbage truck(s)
-
Real loading compactor(s)
-
Front end loader(s)
-
Roll off container(s)
-
Bulldozer(s)
-
Generators
-
Office trailer(s)
-
Office equipment
Key Benefits
-
Recovery of high value recyclables
-
Increased landfill space within the existing footprint
-
Total environmental protection (Air, Water & Land)
-
Old
landfills brought up to modern standards
Total financing is available for landfill
management. |
